Air filter cartridges and liquid filter cartridges may look similar from the outside, especially when they are both made as pleated filter cartridges. However, their working conditions and filtration requirements are very different. A filter cartridge used for compressed air, sterile venting, or gas filtration cannot always be directly used for liquid filtration. In the same way, a liquid filter cartridge may not be suitable for dry air or gas service.

The main difference comes from the filtration medium. Liquid filtration usually requires the filter media to be easily wetted by liquid, while air and gas filtration often require hydrophobic media to prevent water blockage and keep stable air flow.

A liquid filter cartridge is designed to remove particles, colloids, microorganisms, or other impurities from water, chemicals, food and beverage liquids, pharmaceutical liquids, and industrial process fluids. Common filter media include PP, PES, PVDF, nylon, PTFE, glass fiber, stainless steel mesh, and other materials. For many liquid applications, the filter membrane should be hydrophilic, which means it can be wetted by liquid more easily and allows liquid to pass through with lower resistance.

An air filter cartridge is mainly used for compressed air filtration, sterile gas filtration, tank venting, fermentation air, exhaust filtration, and process gas filtration. In these applications, the filter media usually needs to remain dry and breathable. Hydrophobic PTFE membrane is commonly used because it can resist water wetting and maintain air flow even in humid conditions.

This is why air filter cartridges and liquid filter cartridges are not selected only by micron rating. The filter media, wettability, pressure condition, flow requirement, temperature, chemical compatibility, and sterilization method must also be considered.

For liquid filtration, hydrophilic media are commonly selected. PES membrane filter cartridges are widely used in pharmaceutical water, biological liquid, and fine liquid filtration. PP pleated filter cartridges are often used for pre-filtration and general industrial liquid filtration. Nylon and PVDF membranes can also be used depending on chemical compatibility and application requirements.

For air and gas filtration, hydrophobic PTFE filter cartridges are more common. PTFE membrane has strong hydrophobic properties, which helps prevent water vapor or moisture from blocking the membrane pores. This is important for sterile air filtration, compressed air filtration, and tank venting, where stable air flow and microbial retention are required.

If a hydrophilic liquid filter cartridge is used in air filtration, it may absorb moisture and cause higher pressure drop. If a hydrophobic air filter cartridge is used directly for water filtration, it may be difficult to wet without proper pre-wetting or pressure. Therefore, choosing the wrong cartridge can lead to unstable flow, high pressure drop, short service life, or poor filtration performance.

Liquid filter cartridges are mainly used in water treatment, chemical filtration, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical liquid filtration, microelectronics chemicals, paint and ink filtration, oil filtration, and industrial process liquid filtration. Their main purpose is to remove solid particles or microorganisms from liquid and protect downstream equipment, membranes, filling systems, or final products.

Air filter cartridges are used in compressed air systems, sterile air supply, bioreactor venting, storage tank venting, fermentation air, process gas filtration, and vacuum exhaust filtration. Their main purpose is to remove particles, bacteria, aerosols, oil mist, or moisture-related contaminants from air or gas.

In simple terms, liquid filter cartridges focus on liquid flow, dirt-holding capacity, and liquid compatibility. Air filter cartridges focus on gas flow, low air resistance, hydrophobic performance, and stable operation under dry or humid gas conditions.

When selecting a liquid filter cartridge, the main questions are: what liquid needs to be filtered, what particle size should be removed, what flow rate is required, what pressure and temperature are used, and whether the filter material is compatible with the liquid.

When selecting an air filter cartridge, the key questions are: whether the air or gas needs to be sterile, whether moisture is present, what air flow rate is required, what pressure drop is acceptable, and whether the cartridge needs steam sterilization or integrity testing.

For example, a detergent pre-filtration process may use PP pleated filter cartridges or high flow filter cartridges because the purpose is to remove visible particles and undissolved raw materials from liquid. A sterile tank venting application, however, usually requires a hydrophobic PTFE membrane filter cartridge because the cartridge must allow air exchange while preventing microbial contamination.
